SARAH LAWRENCE CENTER FOR THE URBAN RIVER AT BECZAK

ADAPTIVE REUSE

A new trellis and windscreen protect the building’s river exposure.

Yonkers, NY

A gut renovation transformed the Yonkers Habirshaw Wire and Cable social club into an education center with exposed trusses featuring fish tanks within and tidal marsh out to the west. New insulation and weather-stripping, recycled materials and passive heating/cooling strategies improve energy efficiency. The center connects people of all ages to the River.  For Sarah Lawrence College, laboratory and classroom spaces were added to serve its research facility.

The "classroom" is a flexible open space with fish tanks and river views.
