Congregation Shearith Israel

New York, NY

This is the home of North America’s oldest Jewish congregation, established in 1654. STA directed the restoration of the 1897 Beaux Arts synagogue designed by Arnold Brunner with interior finishes and windows by Louis Comfort Tiffany. Ten specialized consultants contributed to the exhaustive preservation scope: exterior limestone mist cleaning, membrane and copper roofs, overhaul of lighting, heating and air conditioning, new mist fire-suppression system, restoration of wood, marble and faux marble architectural plaster (scagliola) surfaces, recovery of Tiffany’s color scheme through microscopic paint analysis and repair and cleaning of gold, silver and brass light fixtures and religious artifacts. Natural and lamp light, glowing metalwork and a subtle luminous paint palette resonate in the restored sanctuary.
