CAUMSETT STATE HISTORIC PARK

HISTORIC PRESERVATION

The Farm Group at Caumsett

Lloyd Harbor, NY

Beginning in 1920, Marshall Field III recreated an English country estate on over 1500 acres of rolling topography on Long Island Sound. Central to his Olmsted-guided creation was the dairy complex where his prize Guernsey cows lived in style. STA directed exterior restoration of sixteen structures in this Georgian-revival complex. Shingles were selectively replaced, windows and trim repaired, consolidated or replaced, and paint brought back the original look of the John Russell Pope/Alfred Hopkins design. STA worked with the Caumsett Foundation on programming options and studied historic ventilation and fire suppression systems, then state of the art, and now attracting renewed interest for their energy saving sustainable features.
