VILLA LEWARO
HISTORIC PRESERVATION
Irvington, NY
This Italian Renaissance estate was the home of Madame C.J. Walker, noted Black entrepreneur, self-made millionaire and philanthropist. In 1918, she commissioned NY State’s first registered Black architect, Vertner Tandy, to design the residence and oversee its construction. One hundred years later, STA embarked on its restoration, starting with an existing-condition investigation and urgent repairs. Ongoing exterior and interior rehabilitation is currently under way. All work is designed to meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties and most work is reviewed under an easement held by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
