ARCHITECTURAL & HISTORIC DISTRICT GUIDELINES

COMMUNITY

Montclair Residential Historic Design Guidelines

Various Municipalities - NY and NJ

These illustrated guides are designed to advise owners of historic properties who are embarking on new construction, renovation and restoration work. Historic districts play a vital role in slowing climate change. By conserving and improving historic buildings rather than constructing new ones, a community reduces its carbon footprint. STA has collaborated with ten cities, villages and towns in the preparation of these guides. Each one is unique, appropriate to the particulars of the place—goals, architectural inventory, and local review procedures. Some guidelines simply set clear directions for work in a homogenous, single era historic district. Others address heterogeneous multi-epoch neighborhoods, providing standards for existing buildings, parameters for new construction and landscape including open space and view preservation, and advice on best sustainable practices. All guidelines and regulations on preservation follow the Secretary of the Interior Standards for Historic Preservation.
