TARRYTOWN LIGHTHOUSE
HISTORIC PRESERVATION
Sleepy Hollow, NY
The Tarrytown Lighthouse safeguarded economically vital river traffic on the Hudson at the Tappan Zee starting in 1883. Decommissioned in 1965, the National Register listed structure became a tourist site and was acquired by Westchester County in 1974. STA was hired to restore the lighthouse and undertook an assessment from river bottom to the top finial. The ultimate scope, carried out from 2022 to 2024, included major repairs to the caisson base, casting of damaged and missing iron components, complete waterproofing and repainting, cathodic protection to abate corrosion, reproduction of missing windows, and restoration of interior spaces. We found a source for a reproduction 4th order Fresnel lens light and returned it to operation, along with a restored sounding bell. The project realizes the County’s goal of preserving this important icon of the Hudson Valley as a cultural and educational asset for generations to come.
